Introduction
Our country India with a population of
around a billion people is the largest democracy in the world.
Our country adopted democracy after we
got independence from the British in 1947.The constitution that we have adopted
does not date back very long and it gives equal liberty and equality to all the
citizens. Our constitution have been one of the most amended documents in the
world with more than 80 changes since it came into force from 26th
January 1950.
Powers of the President
The President is the Head of the State of Republic India. He is
elected by the members of the Parliament of India. The President is elected on
a term of five years and elections are held regularly to change the President
if he is not able to satisfy the needs of the people. The current president of
India is Mrs.Pratibha Patil.
Though the head of the country is the President but the real power
lies in the hand of the Prime Minister. He heads the Executive Branch. The
current Prime Minister of India is Dr. Manmohan Singh.
The political powers are divided in
three different independent branches in
our country.
THEY ARE:
1) The
Legislative Branch
It comprises of the two
houses which are commonly called the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. These two
houses are responsible for making laws in our country.
2) The Executive Branch
The day to day administration is carried out by the Executive
Branch. It is the government which is headed by the Prime Minister that forms
the Executive Branch. There are Ministers appointed who help the Prime Minister
in doing his work. This branch is responsible for executing the laws safely
that are made by the Legislature.
3) The Judicial Branch
This Branch is responsible for protecting the laws if they are
violated by someone. It consists of one Supreme court which is also known as
the Apex court, 21 High Courts and many district courts which solve minor
problems between fellow citizens. This Branch is headed by the Chief Justice of
India who is the most experienced judge in the whole country.
