Woman and equality
Role models in Denmark
We do not have that many female role models i Denmark. We have a lot of sports celebrities like Caroline Wozniacki. She is one of the top tennis players in the whole world. She was born in 1990. She is a former world no. 1 on the WTA Tour. As of January 23rd 2012, she held this position for 67 weeks. She is the first Scandinavian woman to hold the top ranking position and 20th overall.
Political celebrity Helle Thorning-Smith has been the Prime Minister in Denmark since October 2011. She is the leader of the Social Democrats. She is very popular and decides much in our parliament.
The danes have quite good skills at singing. One of them is Medina. She is a famous Pop, dance and R&B singer and songwriter in Europe and the U.S.A. She has made some contracts in U.S.A. and released her english album “Welcome to Medina”
The danish queen is Margrethe the 2nd. she is 71 years old and ruler since 1972. She lives in Amalienborg in Copenhagen with the whole royal family. It has to be sad that even though she is the queen, she doesn’t have any legislative power.
Women and education
In Denmark women have the same access to educations and salary as men. But it´s not usual for women to have the “hard” jobs (as examples, soldiers, craftsmen, removers, woodcutters and mechanics) like lots of men have.
The society helps women, when they get a child, they go on maternity leave. If the mother is very young, she can get some advices.
Laws to protect women and promote equality
In Denmark we have a form for equal rights for men and women. We have a law, which provides that women can have the same job as men and the reverse. It´s kind of racism to make difference between men and women. Even though it’s still the men who earns most money, because it’s often that the women wants the jobs that isn’t the highest paid jobs. And they want to take care of their family rather than they want to work all day long.
How women combine parenthood with a career
When a woman gave birth to a child, she goes on maternity leave. Some women stay at home with their children for a very long time. In that case it´s the father who earns money. But normally the mother gets back to work when the child goes to nursery. A woman has the right to go on maternity leave in 52 weeks. Women normally go on maternity leave 4 weeks before the birth. Sometimes the men take the maternity leave for some months, so the women can get back to work a few months earlier.
Women and abortion
Women in Denmark have right to abortion. She can be pregnant up to 3 months before abortion. If the woman is under 18 years old, she has to have a permission from her parents. 40 foetuses die every day. Since 1973, the number of abortions has fallen. But more and more young women, who did not get pregnant on purpose , had abortion.
